Synopsis: "Nelly's Bodega" is about a Latina woman who breaks out of an abusive marriage through her faith in the Yoruba deity Oshun and her friendship with a young African-American girl named Fatima. It is a story set in a New York City grocery store where the colors of Afro-Cuban folklore vibrate and kids come in and out to buy candy or learn lessons in life. The film was written and directed by Omonike Akinyemi. "Nelly's Bodega" won "Best Drama" at the 2004 Women of Color Film Festival and "Best International Film" at the 2004 Abuja Film Festival". It has been screened at the Cannes Film Festival, Torino Women's Film Festival, and in the 2001 Fespaco Official Short Film Competitiionas well.
The film has is appropriate for ages 12 and up.
